Windsor, Connecticut's first English settlement, was founded by settlers from Plymouth and Dorchester, Massachusetts, invited by Indians to mediate between tribes.

The English founded a trading post at the present site of Windsor in 1633. They were invited by friendly Indians as mediators with threatening, more warlike tribes. In exchange, the Podunk Indians gave them land where the Farmington River meets the west bank of the Connecticut River.

Edward Winslow came from Plymouth to inspect the land and William Holmes led the first settlers. In 1635, clergymen from Dorchester brought a group of about 60 settlers. Most of them had embarked for America from Plymouth, England five years earlier aboard the ship Mary and John.

The Allyn, Barber, Case, Chaffee, Chapman and Ellsworth homesteads are on the National Register of Historic Places, as is the Bissell Tavern, a former stagecoach stop.
