Colonist Jonathan Brewster arrived in Plymouth in the fall of 1621, son of the Colony's respected elder, William Brewster.
Jonathan (1593-1659), born at Scrooby in Nottinghamshire, came to Plymouth aboard the Fortune in the fall of 1621. About 1610, Jonathan had accompanied his family to Leyden in Holland, where he married his first wife. Brewster did not join his family on the Mayflower in 1620, He stayed behind in Leyden instead with his wife, who died soon after, and their infant son, who also died. Brewster then came to America on the ship Fortune in 1621. Jonathan BrewsterPrimogeniture was then a subtle thing. Nothing deemed that Jonathan should take on his father’s role as elder of the Plymouth settlement, but the role did devolve upon him. On April 10, 1624, in Plymouth, Jonathan Brewster married Lucretia Oldham, the daughter of William Oldham and Phillipa Sowter; her brother was Captain John Oldham, whose slaying led to the Pequot Indian war. Brewster and Oldham had eight children. Their children were:
Jonathan Brewster died on August 7, 1659 in New London, Connecticut. He was buried at Brewster's Plain, Norwich, Connecticut. Line of Descent from Jonathan BrewsterThis line of descent is from Jonathan Brewster’s daughter Mary.
